How Orthodontics Work
The goal of orthodontic treatment is the same for children, teenagers, or adults – to straighten teeth so they look better and work better.
This goal is achieved using braces or clear aligners that put gentle pressure on your teeth to move them into the correct position over a period of months or years.
Our dental team will work with you to help choose the best orthodontic treatment for you based on your age and lifestyle.
Invisalign Clear Aligners
Invisalign is a metal-free way to straighten teeth as an alternative to braces. Some of the key features of clear aligner treatment include:- Invisalign aligners are less noticeable than braces
- The aligners are smooth for increased comfort
- Aligners can be removed for easy cleaning
- You can eat whatever you want
- There are no wires or brackets to irritate your mouth
- It's easy to floss and brush your teeth
Is Invisalign right for you?
If you’re a candidate for Invisalign, our team will take impressions of your smile and use 3D imaging software to create a series of virtually invisible aligners. You’ll wear each aligner in the series for approximately two weeks before moving on to the next.
Traditional Braces
Unlike Invisalign, braces cannot be removed and must be tightened at regular dental appointments. Over time, braces can correct problems with your teeth, bite, and jaw – while also improving the overall look of your smile.
Today, there are plenty of options available that can make braces much smaller, less noticeable, and more comfortable.
Retainers in Antigonish
A retainer is an orthodontic appliance (usually removable) that is supposed to be worn after your orthodontist removes your braces. When braces are removed, the teeth tend to want to return to their original positions. Retainers prevent this from happening.
Most upper retainers are made of wire and hard plastic and fit in the roof of your mouth. A lower retainer can be removable or permanently cemented to the lower teeth so that it doesn’t come out.
